Our Beers
The Publican House Ale, our flagship brand, at 4.8% alcohol is a traditional German table beer made exclusively with Wyermann malts and Continental noble hops. Flavorful with a broad general appeal to beer drinkers, this product is in production year round and is available in 1.9 litre growlers as well as 473ml. cans. Our signature ale carries the name of the brewery and pub. The term 'publican' dates back centuries to early England and was the genesis of the local brewery and watering hole for town residents as well as travelers through who could stop and refresh themselves and get to know some of the locals in the 'public house'.
Square Nail Pale Ale, a west coast style pale ale that finishes off with a gentle bitterness. At 5.6% alcohol it is a full flavoured ale brewed with Saskatchewan malted barley and Crystal malts along with several large additions of Cascade hops to give the beer an assertive bitterness and Aroma. It is named after the hundreds and hundreds of square nails that we found during the first phase of the building renovation. No doubt these nails were hand crafted by many of the local blacksmiths in Peterborough in the mid-1800's.
O.C. Rouse Wheat Ale, 4.5% alcohol is a light summery style ale, brewed with a high proportion of German Wheat Malt and gently hopped with traditional lager hops for a clean easy drinking taste experience. A very popular light summer ale, it is named after the Doctor who commissioned the building of the original house some 160 years ago. Typically available from late April to late September.
Henry's Irish Ale, 5.6% alcohol is a full flavoured dark ale made with U.K. pale malt and roasted barley along with Fuggles hops to give it a nutty toasted flavour with gentle bitterness. Henry's Irish is named after Henry Strickland who was the owner of a brewery in Peterborough around the turn of the century. Henry's Irish Ale is our winter seasonal ale, available October through March.
Stonewall Stout, 4.6% alcohol, seasonally brewed in March with U.K. Pale malt, toasted barley flakes and a generous amount of roasted barley. The stout is finished with East Kent Golding hops and has 35 IBU. Available March and April.
Eight or Better is the newest beer in our line-up. Sold in 1.9 litre growlers, and 750ml bottles. 8.1% alcohol, it is a Belgium style trippel made with Abbey Malt and two row malted barley. Hops include Sazz, EKG and Perle all of which are sourced from Europe. The yeast was acquired from White Labs and is used by two traditional Trappist Breweries.
Head of the Fest Lager, the only lager we make is named after a very popular late-September event held annually in Peterborough, The Head of The Trent Festival. This great Fall event includes a university level rowing regatta on the canal at Trent University. This lager is only available in September.
